Scorched Earth

Scorched Earth was released in 1997 as part of the Tempest expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, Tempest was the first set in the Rath Cycle and was designed to emphasize aggressive gameplay and strategic resource management. The card serves as a land destruction spell, reflecting the set’s mechanical focus on disrupting an opponent’s mana base to gain a tactical advantage in the mid-to-late game.

The artwork for Scorched Earth was created by illustrator Greg Staples. His dark, evocative style captures the bleak nature of the card's effect, depicting a landscape ravaged by magical fire. The design was received by the player base as a niche but functional tool for red-based control decks, finding its place within the competitive landscape of the era as a way to punish players relying on non-basic lands.
