Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder

Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder was released in the 2006 Magic: The Gathering set Time Spiral. Designed as a rare legendary creature, the card draws upon the lore of the Fallen Empires expansion, specifically focusing on the character of Endrek Sahr, a thrull breeder from the Sarpadian continent. The card was conceptualized during a design period where Wizards of the Coast leaned heavily into nostalgia, mechanical complexity, and callbacks to the game's earliest narrative arcs.

The card was illustrated by artist Greg Staples, who utilized a dark, gothic aesthetic to emphasize Sahr’s morbid profession. The mechanics were crafted to represent his role as a creator of thrulls, balancing the production of creature tokens against a restrictive death-trigger penalty that encourages players to manage their board state carefully. Upon its release, the card was received as a flavorful, albeit challenging, build-around piece for Commander players, noted for its thematic cohesion rather than competitive dominance in tournament play.
