Ephemerate was originally introduced in the 2019 expansion Modern Horizons, designed by Wizards of the Coast to bring new cards directly into the Modern format. The card quickly gained a reputation as a powerhouse in white-based control and tempo decks due to its efficiency in flickering permanents for immediate value. The Art Series release followed as a specialized product line featuring oversized, borderless versions of cards from the Modern Horizons set, intended for display rather than standard tournament play.

The artwork for this specific iteration was created by illustrator Matt Stewart.
