What it does

Search target opponent's library for an artifact, creature, enchantment, or land card. Put that card onto the battlefield under your control. Then that player shuffles.

Epic (For the rest of the game, you can't cast spells. At the beginning of each of your upkeeps, copy this spell except for its epic ability. You may choose a new target for the copy.)

Provenance

Where it came from

Eternal Dominion was originally released in 2005 as part of the Saviors of Kamigawa expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a rare sorcery, it serves as the centerpiece of a cycle of Epic spells that, upon resolution, prevent the player from casting any further spells for the remainder of the game while automatically replicating the spell’s effect at the beginning of each of the player’s subsequent upkeeps. This design was intended to create a high-risk, high-reward win condition that forces the player to commit entirely to a single strategy.

The card’s artwork was illustrated by Kev Walker, a longtime contributor to the game known for his distinctively gritty and atmospheric fantasy style. Walker was tasked with depicting the overwhelming power of the card's effect, resulting in a visual representation of chaotic, sweeping magical forces. Upon release, the card became a subject of fascination for casual players drawn to the challenge of building decks that could function under the self-imposed restrictions of the Epic mechanic, even if it saw limited competitive play.
