Provenance

Where it came from

The Eternal Dragon was released in 2003 as part of the Scourge expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the final set in the Onslaught block, Scourge focused on powerful dragons and mechanics that rewarded players for running high-cost cards in their decks. The creature was designed to provide utility, featuring a cycling ability that allowed players to search their library for Plains cards, ensuring a reliable mana base while serving as a recurring late-game threat.

The artwork was created by fantasy illustrator Tony Szczudlo, who utilized a distinct, painterly style to render the dragon in a stark, monumental pose. His design emphasized the creature's ethereal, skeletal nature, fitting the set's themes of ancient power and resurrection. Upon its release, the card was well-regarded by players for its efficiency in control decks, eventually becoming a staple in various tournament-level formats during its time in the active card pool.
