Where it came from
The Eternal Dragon card from the 2004 World Championship Decks reflects a unique era in the Magic: The Gathering competitive scene. These decks were released by Wizards of the Coast as high-quality, non-tournament-legal replicas of the top-performing decks used by players at the 2004 World Championship. This specific card was included in the 'Jaberwock' deck, played by Manuel Bevand, showcasing the card's utility in control archetypes during the Onslaught and Mirrodin block era.
Designed by Kev Walker, the original Eternal Dragon art captures the majestic and cyclical nature of the creature, fitting the mechanics of a card that can return from the graveyard to the hand. While the original set release sought to capture the aesthetic of the game's high-fantasy world, the 2004 Championship version is distinguished by its unique gold-bordered frame and the printed signature of the professional player on the front. These decks were produced primarily for fans and aspiring competitive players who wanted to experience the strategy of top-tier tournament play without needing to hunt down rare, tournament-legal original prints.
