Where it came from
Eternal Thirst was released in 2020 as part of the Jumpstart set, a unique product designed to provide a ready-to-play experience for Magic: The Gathering players. The card serves as an enchantment within the black color identity, specifically crafted to support the +1/+1 counter synergy found in various deck themes. Its inclusion in the set reflects Wizards of the Coast's effort to create accessible, flavorful gameplay environments that blend new cards with thematic reprints.
The artwork, illustrated by Greg Staples, captures the grim aesthetic associated with black-mana cards in the game. Staples aimed to evoke a sense of vampiric hunger and supernatural lingering, consistent with the card's mechanical ability to grow stronger whenever a creature dies. Upon its release, it was well-received by limited-format players for its utility in boosting creatures and providing a recurring threat in aggressive deck builds.
