Where it came from
Ethereal Forager was released in 2020 as part of the Commander 2020 set, specifically originating from the Timeless Wisdom preconstructed deck. This set was designed to coincide with the release of the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths expansion, featuring the unique 'cycling' mechanic that rewards players for discarding cards to draw new ones. The card is intended to support spell-based strategies by allowing players to recur instants and sorceries from their graveyard.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent figure in the Magic: The Gathering community known for her evocative and painterly style. Villeneuve aimed to capture the ethereal, spectral nature of the creature as it scouts through the environment. Upon release, the card was received as a solid utility piece for Commander decks centered on graveyard synergy and spell casting, valued for its ability to provide card advantage while also serving as a flying threat.
