Where it came from
Evacuation was first introduced to the Magic: The Gathering card game in the Tempest set in 1997, later appearing in the Eighth Edition core set as card number 76. Designed as a blue sorcery, the card functions as a board wipe that returns all creatures to their owners' hands, reflecting the color's thematic reliance on tempo and control rather than outright destruction. This mechanical identity has made it a staple in blue-based deck archetypes for years.
The artwork for the Eighth Edition printing was created by artist Arnie Swekel, who utilized a distinct style to capture the chaotic nature of the spell. By depicting creatures being swept away by a powerful, swirling magical force, the illustration emphasizes the card's function of clearing the battlefield. Upon its release in the core set, it was received as a functional, necessary tool for blue mages, maintaining its status as a reliable utility card within the broader context of the game's evolving competitive landscape.
