Where it came from
Every Dream a Nightmare was released in 2017 as part of the Archenemy: Nicol Bolas set. This product revitalized the Archenemy format, a casual multiplayer variant of Magic: The Gathering where one player acts as a raid boss against a team of opponents. The scheme cards function as the archenemy's deck, providing powerful, randomized effects to balance the disadvantage of fighting multiple players simultaneously.
The card features the art of Daarken, a prolific illustrator for the game known for his dark and atmospheric fantasy style. The design depicts the overwhelming influence of the elder dragon Nicol Bolas, capturing the thematic dread of his schemes. Reception was largely driven by the card's mechanical utility in the specific Archenemy format, where it serves to punish opponents who overextend their resources.
