A Reckoning Approaches

A Reckoning Approaches was released in 2017 as part of the Archenemy: Nicol Bolas set, a specialized expansion for Magic: The Gathering designed to facilitate a one-versus-many cooperative play experience. This scheme card serves as a mechanical representation of the titular elder dragon's overarching influence, functioning within a format where one player acts as the antagonist against a team of opponents. The card's inclusion in this set was intended to escalate the stakes of the game, providing the archenemy with a powerful, singular turn-based effect that necessitates a coordinated response from the remaining players.

The artwork for this piece was commissioned by Wizards of the Coast to emphasize the menacing scale and intellectual arrogance of Nicol Bolas. The design focuses on the visual language of impending doom, using dramatic lighting and a perspective that positions the viewer beneath the scope of the dragon's plans. Within the broader context of the set's release, the card was well-received by players seeking to replicate the flavor of the game's high-fantasy narrative, specifically capturing the tension inherent in facing off against one of the multiverse's most prominent antagonists.
