Where it came from
When Will You Learn? was released as part of the Archenemy: Nicol Bolas set in 2017, a supplementary product for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game designed for the Archenemy multiplayer format. In this variant, one player takes on the role of the archenemy, utilizing a specialized deck of Scheme cards that grant powerful, game-altering effects. This specific scheme was crafted to reflect the manipulative and arrogant nature of the dragon planeswalker Nicol Bolas, serving as a tool for players to enforce their dominance over opponents.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who captured the menacing, high-fantasy aesthetic signature to the Nicol Bolas narrative arc. The design focuses on the theme of punitive control, forcing opponents to discard cards or face consequences, which aligns with the blue and black color identity typically associated with Bolas. The set was generally well-received by the Magic community for its thematic cohesion and its ability to provide a unique, asymmetric gameplay experience that deviated from standard competitive play.
