Lore

Why it matters

This common card from the Commander Masters set serves as a versatile tool for disrupting an opponent's strategy at the table. Its ability to remove a target spell from the stack makes it a reliable choice for players looking to manage the flow of the game and protect their own board state.

Provenance

Where it came from

Exclude was released in 2023 as part of the Commander Masters set, a premium expansion designed specifically to support the Commander format of Magic: The Gathering. The card was reprinted with updated artwork, reflecting the game's ongoing practice of revisiting influential mechanics to balance the needs of both legacy players and those new to the format.

The illustration for this iteration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, whose work often leans into high-fantasy sensibilities and dramatic lighting. His design choice for Exclude emphasizes the tension of a sudden magical negation, a visual translation of the card's function as a counterspell that serves a dual purpose by replacing itself in the caster's hand.
