Where it came from
The Experience token was released as part of the Commander Anthology set in 2017. This collection was curated to provide players with a consolidated entry point into the Commander format, featuring reprints of popular decks from previous years. The token itself serves a utilitarian role in gameplay, specifically designed to track 'experience counters' for commanders like Mizzix of the Izmagnus or Meren of Clan Nel Toth, which rely on cumulative progress to power their abilities.
The design of the token maintains the visual language established by Wizards of the Coast for supplemental card types, prioritizing clarity and functional iconography. As part of the broader Commander Anthology package, the token reflects the company's shift toward creating more immersive gameplay aids that minimize the need for external dice or markers. It was received by the player base as a welcome, standard inclusion that brought a polished, official aesthetic to long-standing mechanical requirements.
