Where it came from
The Eye of Vecna was released in 2021 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Adventures in the Forgotten Realms, which marked the first time the game featured a crossover with the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop roleplaying setting. The card was designed to translate the legendary, eponymous D&D artifact into a functional game mechanic, embodying the flavor of a powerful relic that demands a sacrifice of health to provide significant card advantage.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who sought to capture the ominous, necrotic aesthetic of the artifact. Within the game's meta-environment, the card gained recognition for its utility in Commander format decks, where the trade-off of life points for additional cards fits well with the higher starting life totals and strategic needs of that style of play.
