Provenance

Where it came from

The Eye of Yawgmoth was originally released in the Nemesis expansion of Magic: The Gathering in early 2000. It was designed as part of the Phyrexian-themed block, embodying the dark, mechanical aesthetic of the expansion's primary antagonists. The card's mechanics reflect the sacrifice-heavy philosophy of the Phyrexian faction, rewarding players for discarding cards to fuel powerful, cost-reducing effects.

The artwork, illustrated by Greg Staples, captures a haunting, industrial sense of dread that defined much of the visual identity for the Nemesis set. Over time, the card has gained a reputation in various formats for its unique utility in combo-based strategies. Its appearance in The List, a curated selection of cards reprinted in set boosters, allows newer players to experience pieces of Magic's deep history that originally debuted during the game's early growth period.
