Where it came from
Faerie Seer was originally released in the 2019 Modern Horizons expansion, a set uniquely designed for Magic: The Gathering to introduce new cards directly into the Modern format without passing through Standard legality. As a low-cost, blue-aligned creature with the 'scry' mechanic, it was conceptualized to provide utility and deck manipulation for tempo-oriented strategies, particularly those revolving around the Faerie creature type.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Nils Hamm, whose distinctive, ethereal, and painterly style has become a hallmark of the game's aesthetic. Hamm designed the Seer to evoke the enigmatic and elusive nature of the fae, focusing on a dark, mystical color palette that emphasizes the character's role as an oracle. Upon release, it was well-received by competitive players for its efficiency, quickly becoming a staple in Pauper and Modern competitive decks.
