Where it came from
Etchings of the Chosen was released in 2019 as part of the Modern Horizons set, a collection specifically designed to introduce new cards directly into the Modern format without passing through Standard legality. The design intent was to provide tribal synergy for creature types that had fallen out of favor, specifically focusing on the sacrifice-themed mechanics often associated with black and white decks.
The card was illustrated by Chris Rahn, who sought to capture the somber, ritualistic nature of the Orzhov-adjacent flavor associated with the effect. The card was generally received as a niche but functional piece for Aristocrat-style strategies, valued by players for its ability to protect creatures while simultaneously buffing them, fitting neatly into the self-sacrifice gameplay loop established in the Modern Horizons meta.
