Where it came from
Sphinx of the Second Sun was released in 2020 as part of the Commander Legends expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed specifically for the Commander format, featuring a unique draft experience that focused on multiplayer dynamics. The creature reflects the high-fantasy aesthetic of the Amonkhet plane, a setting inspired by ancient Egyptian mythology, which provided the thematic backdrop for this powerful sphinx.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who crafted an imposing depiction of the creature amidst a golden, arid landscape. Mechanically, the card was designed to grant players an additional beginning phase after their main phase, offering a distinct advantage in resource management and tactical planning. It was well-received by players for its impactful ability to shift the momentum of a game, quickly becoming a staple in decks that utilize mana-intensive spells.
