What it does
Council's dilemma — Starting with you, each player votes for past or present. You mill a card for each past vote, then Fateful Tempest deals damage to each opponent equal to the total mana value of cards milled this way. Exile the top card of your library for each present vote. Until the end of your next turn, you may play the exiled cards.

Where it came from
Fateful Tempest was released in 2021 as part of the Commander 2021 cycle tied to the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion. The card was featured in the Prismari Performance deck, which focuses on the university's red and blue alignment. Its design reflects the chaotic and performative nature of the Prismari mages, who express their magical prowess through dramatic displays of elemental energy.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-standing contributor to the game known for his expressive, painterly style. In creating the artwork for this sorcery, Voss focused on the tension between artistic creation and destructive power, capturing the aesthetic identity of Strixhaven's creative spellcasters. Upon its debut, the card was received as a flavorful, if niche, inclusion for Commander players looking to leverage high-cost, high-impact spells in multiplayer formats.
