What it does
Council's dilemma — Starting with you, each player votes for past or present. You mill a card for each past vote, then Fateful Tempest deals damage to each opponent equal to the total mana value of cards milled this way. Exile the top card of your library for each present vote. Until the end of your next turn, you may play the exiled cards.

Where it came from
Fateful Tempest was released in 2021 as part of the Secrets of Strixhaven Commander set, a supplemental product tied to the Magic: The Gathering expansion Strixhaven: School of Mages. The card was designed to support the set's focus on multicolored spellcasting and high-impact board interactions, fitting the academic theme of the fictional arcane university. Mechanically, it serves as a powerful red sorcery, reflecting the volatile and destructive nature of the school's Prismari college.
The artwork for the card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game whose style is known for vibrant lighting and sweeping, painterly compositions. Voss sought to capture the chaotic aesthetic of the Prismari mages, who express their magic through grand, dramatic gestures. Upon release, the card was received as a situational but effective tool in Commander decks, valued by players for its ability to punish opponents who prioritize mana acceleration over immediate battlefield presence.
