Where it came from
Striding Shotcaller // Run the Play was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages Commander set. Designed for the Prismari Performance deck, this card features a modal double-faced mechanic, allowing players to utilize it either as a creature that synergizes with spellcasting or as a sorcery that provides card advantage. The design intent was to reflect the creative and performative nature of the Prismari college, which focuses on the intersection of art and elemental magic.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who captured the vibrant, expressive aesthetic characteristic of the Strixhaven setting. The visual language emphasizes dynamic motion and arcane energy, aligning with the broader creative direction for the set that aimed to blend a classic university academic environment with high-fantasy magical combat. Upon release, it was recognized by the Magic: The Gathering community as a functional tool for decks relying on instant and sorcery spells, fitting seamlessly into the established power level of supplemental Commander products.
