Where it came from
Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest was originally released in the 2015 Commander set, reflecting the intricate ecology of the plane of Ravnica. The character represents the Kraul, a race of insectoid beings who serve the Golgari Swarm, and the card's design mechanically mirrors the Golgari philosophy of growth through decay. By utilizing a trigger that grants +1/+1 counters to all creatures whenever a permanent is sacrificed, the card highlights the guild's reliance on cycle-based attrition.
The artwork for this particular iteration, appearing in the Secrets of Strixhaven Commander release, maintains the visual identity established by illustrator Greg Staples. Staples focused on conveying the alien, chittering nature of the Kraul hive-mind, emphasizing the priest's role in presiding over death rituals. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its ability to dominate board states in formats centered on sacrifice synergies, solidifying its place as a staple in green-black Commander decks.
