Where it came from
Feldon, Ronom Excavator was released in 2022 as part of The Brothers' War expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card depicts the historical figure Feldon of the Third Path during his younger years in the frozen Ronom Glacier, exploring the artifacts of the ancient war. It was specifically issued as a showcase promo, featuring an alternate art style intended to evoke the aesthetic of mid-century technical schematics and blueprints that defined the set's artistic direction.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, who utilized a distinct, minimalist draftsmanship style to contrast with the more painterly portrayals of characters in the main set. The design choices were praised by the community for effectively bridging the gap between the game's high-fantasy elements and the industrial, archeological themes of the Brothers' War narrative. As a mechanical piece, the card functions as a graveyard-focused engine, reflecting the character's obsession with reconstruction.
