Where it came from
The Skitterbeam Battalion, featured as a promotional card in the 2022 expansion The Brothers' War, serves as a thematic homage to the long-standing conflict between the brothers Urza and Mishra within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. Designed to represent the mechanical ingenuity and destructive potential of the Phyrexians and the Brothers’ respective armies, this card captures the essence of the set’s artifact-heavy gameplay. It was released as part of a series of promotional cards intended to showcase key mechanical concepts of the expansion, specifically the production of recurring artifact creature tokens.
The visual design of the Skitterbeam Battalion focuses on the intricate, industrious, and often terrifying aesthetic of the game's artifact creatures. By depicting a swarm of modular machines, the artwork emphasizes the themes of industrial war and mechanical self-replication that define the lore of The Brothers' War. The card was generally well-received by players for its synergy with artifact-focused archetypes, serving as a functional and flavorful addition to the set’s narrative of a world consumed by unending mechanical combat.
