Fervent Cathar

Fervent Cathar was released in May 2012 as part of the Avacyn Restored set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set served as the dramatic conclusion to the Innistrad block, a gothic horror-themed expansion where players navigated a world inspired by classic monster lore and religious iconography. Within the narrative, the card represents the desperate defensive efforts of human soldiers serving the Archangel Avacyn during a period of profound spiritual and physical siege.

The card’s artwork was rendered by illustrator Steven Belledin, who aimed to capture the intense, uncompromising zeal of the Cathar order. Belledin’s design focuses on the character’s aggressive stance and tactical utility, emphasizing the role of the Cathar as a frontline combatant meant to force openings in enemy lines.
