Where it came from
Fervent Champion was released as part of the Throne of Eldraine set in 2019, drawing heavy thematic inspiration from Arthurian legend and high-fantasy folklore. The card was designed as an aggressive, low-cost creature meant to facilitate rapid starts in red-based deck strategies. Its specific promo version, featuring the collector number 124s, was distributed as a participation or store-level promotional item, common in the structured play environments supported by Wizards of the Coast during this era.
The visual identity of the piece was crafted to emphasize the 'Knight' subtype, utilizing the distinct aesthetic language of the Eldraine plane, which blends fairy-tale whimsy with gritty medieval military motifs. Artists contributing to this set were tasked with creating a cohesive look that felt both classic and fresh, resulting in a design that gained favor among competitive players for its efficiency and synergy within tribal-focused deck lists. It remains a notable example of modern card framing and the integration of character-driven design in the trading card game landscape.
