Where it came from
Fervent Champion was released in 2019 as part of the Throne of Eldraine expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set drew heavy inspiration from Arthurian legend and European fairy tales, aiming to blend high fantasy with whimsical, storybook motifs. The card was designed as a low-cost, aggressive creature intended to support Knight-themed decks, reflecting the set's focus on honorable combat and chivalric quests.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game known for his vibrant and emotive style. Voss captured the archetype of the eager, young knight with a dynamic composition that emphasizes both the character's kinetic energy and the regal, romanticized aesthetic of the Eldraine setting. Upon its release, it became a staple in competitive formats, particularly noted for its synergy with equipment and aura-based strategies.
