Where it came from
Fervent Champion was released in 2019 as part of the Throne of Eldraine set for Magic: The Gathering. Drawing thematic inspiration from Arthurian legend and high-fantasy folklore, the set aimed to blend iconic fairy tale imagery with the high-stakes mechanical depth characteristic of the game. As a low-cost, aggressive creature, it was designed to support Knight-themed decks and fast-paced combat strategies that defined the competitive meta during its time in the Standard format.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Bram Sels, who sought to capture the kinetic energy and protective zeal of a dedicated knight. By depicting the champion in a dynamic, ready-to-strike pose, Sels emphasized the character's role as a vanguard unit. Upon release, the card received significant attention from competitive players for its efficiency and ability to bolster other equipment-based synergies, quickly becoming a staple in red-aggro deck lists.
