Where it came from
Mental Journey was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed as a direct-to-modern set, Modern Horizons 2 aimed to introduce new cards into the Modern format without them needing to pass through a Standard legality window. The card functions as a blue sorcery that facilitates card selection, drawing three cards and discarding two, echoing the design philosophy of filtering mechanics that have been a staple of the color blue throughout the game's history.
The artwork for Mental Journey was created by artist Titus Lunter. Lunter is known for his atmospheric and immersive landscapes within the Magic: The Gathering universe. His design for this piece captures the theme of arcane enlightenment and mental expansion, utilizing a palette that emphasizes the ethereal nature of the spell. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional tool for decks looking to manipulate their graveyard and library consistency, fitting neatly into the archetype of utility-based card advantage.
