Where it came from
First Sliver's Chosen was released in 2019 as part of Modern Horizons, the first Magic: The Gathering set designed specifically to introduce new cards directly into the Modern format without them passing through a standard expansion. The card was created to provide a specialized support piece for the popular 'Sliver' creature subtype, leaning into the tribal mechanics that define the archetype by allowing players to exile a Sliver card to bolster their board presence.
The card’s illustration was crafted by Nils Hamm, a frequent contributor to the game known for his atmospheric, often ethereal painterly style. His design emphasizes the swift, lethal nature of the sliver hive-mind, focusing on the dynamic movement of the creature. Upon its release, it was well-received by players focusing on tribal Commander and Modern decks, as it offered a utility-based combat trick that rewarded players for maintaining a deep collection of Sliver-themed cards.
