Where it came from
Shatter Assumptions was released in 2024 as part of the Modern Horizons 3 set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was designed by Wizards of the Coast to introduce powerful, direct-to-Modern cards that draw on the game's expansive history while offering new mechanics and synergies for competitive play. As a blue sorcery card, it fits into the set's broader goal of providing utility and interaction options that challenge established deck-building constraints within the Modern format.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who has contributed extensively to the visual identity of Magic: The Gathering. Voss is known for his atmospheric and emotionally resonant style, often focusing on lighting and ethereal qualities to elevate the game's fantasy motifs. Shatter Assumptions reflects this approach through its clean, evocative depiction of magic in motion, which was well-received by the player base for its aesthetic polish and contribution to the visual narrative of the set.
