Where it came from
Five-Finger Discount was released in December 2017 as part of the Unstable set for Magic: The Gathering. Designed as part of the game's third 'un-set,' the card belongs to a series specifically crafted for casual play, utilizing mechanics that break the traditional rules of the game to provide a humorous and experimental experience. The set was designed by a team led by Mark Rosewater, who sought to blend silver-bordered absurdity with functional game design that tests player dexterity and social interaction.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who captured the chaotic, whimsical tone of the set through a dynamic and playful depiction of a theft. As a silver-bordered card, Five-Finger Discount is not legal in standard tournament play, a design choice intended to allow for unconventional mechanics like 'dexterity' challenges. Upon its release, it was well-received by the community for its lighthearted departure from the serious lore of the multiverse, becoming a staple for novelty draft environments.
