Provenance

Where it came from

Multi-Headed was released in 2017 as part of Unstable, the third 'un-set' produced by Wizards of the Coast for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed by Mark Rosewater and his team, the set was intended to explore the humorous and boundary-pushing side of the game through mechanics that would not be functional or appropriate for tournament play. The set aimed to celebrate the game's community and history while experimenting with creative interactions that rely on the physical space of the table.

The card was illustrated by YW Tang, whose art style for the set leaned into the whimsical, retro-futuristic aesthetic characteristic of the Unstable plane of Segovia. The design of the creature reflects the set's focus on unconventional mechanics, specifically utilizing the 'augment' ability which allows players to physically attach halves of cards together. Upon release, it was well-received by fans of casual play and novelty collectors for its playful take on creature design.
