Floodwater Dam

Floodwater Dam was released in 1996 as part of the Alliances expansion for Magic: The Gathering. During this era, Wizards of the Coast was experimenting with set mechanics that emphasized resource management and board control, with Alliances notably introducing a 'snow-covered' subtheme and intricate card interactions. The set was designed to be drafted alongside the preceding Ice Age expansion, grounding the card in a thematic landscape of harsh, wintry survival and territorial struggle.

The artwork was provided by Randy Gallegos, whose illustrations during the mid-nineties helped define the visual identity of the game. Gallegos focused on capturing the utilitarian and stoic nature of the structure, using a somber, earthen palette that reflected the card's function as a defensive artifact. While the card is often cited by collectors for its niche mechanical application in competitive play, it remains a recognized example of the period's atmospheric artistic direction.
