Where it came from
Suffocation was released in 1996 as part of the Alliances expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the third set in the Ice Age block, Alliances was designed to shift the game's mechanical landscape by introducing cards that rewarded players for committing heavily to a single color, reflecting the narrative of the bitter war between the forces of Lim-Dûl and the allied nations of ice-bound Dominaria.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Dan Frazier, a veteran contributor to the early years of the game. Frazier utilized his signature ink and watercolor style to interpret the visceral concept of suffocation, aiming to capture the suffocating dread of the black-mana-aligned magic through dark, abstract imagery that stood out against the set's broader thematic focus on tactical military maneuvers.
