Provenance

Where it came from

Fold into Aether was released in 2004 as part of the Fifth Dawn expansion, the concluding set in the Mirrodin block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set explored the transition of the metallic world of Mirrodin as it integrated organic elements, a theme reflected in the card's mechanics which allow a player to exchange a card from their hand for one from the top of their library.

The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Matt Cavotta, who was a prominent contributor to the game's aesthetic during this era. His design focused on the ethereal, shifting nature of energy manipulation, portraying a figure caught in a moment of transformation. The card was received by players as a niche utility tool, often utilized in casual formats for its potential to cheat high-cost permanents into play, even if it never became a staple of competitive tournament play.
