Tangle Asp

Tangle Asp was released in 2004 as part of the Fifth Dawn expansion, the concluding set in the Mirrodin block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed to explore the mechanical consequences of the artifact-heavy environment introduced earlier in the block, specifically focusing on the intersection of artifacts and traditional creature types. The Asp, a green creature with the reach ability, was created to provide players with a common-rarity defensive option capable of interacting with the set's flying artifact creatures.

The card’s visual identity was crafted by artist Daren Bader, who has contributed to the game since the late 1990s. Bader’s illustration leans into the biomechanical aesthetic defining the Mirrodin setting, blending organic, snakelike features with metallic, jagged textures to reflect the plane’s unique ecosystem. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, straightforward common intended primarily for limited-format play, providing a consistent, if unspectacular, tool for players to stabilize their board states against aerial threats.
