Where it came from
Folio of Fancies is a rare promotional card released as part of the Throne of Eldraine expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2019. It was distributed specifically as a Buy-a-Box promotion, intended to incentivize players to purchase full display boxes of the set from local hobby game stores. The card features a distinct, extended art frame that differs from the standard version found in booster packs, a design practice Wizards of the Coast employed to elevate the collectibility of early-purchase incentives.
The artwork was illustrated by Chuck Lukacs, who leaned into the set's high-fantasy and fairy-tale aesthetic. The design evokes the whimsical nature of Eldraine, utilizing a magical, scroll-like motif that reflects the card's function as a vessel for knowledge and deck-thinning mechanics. Upon its release, the card was received with interest by players due to its unique ability to force both players to draw cards, making it a staple in niche Commander decks and a recognized piece of modern Magic: The Gathering promotional history.
