Where it came from
Font of Return was released in May 2014 as part of Journey into Nyx, the third and final expansion of the Theros block for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed to explore the intersection of Greek mythology and the game's high-fantasy mechanics, focusing on the influence of the gods of the plane of Nyx. As an enchantment in a set that heavily favored enchantment-based synergy, this card was created to provide players with a repeatable graveyard recursion engine, reflecting the cyclical nature of life and death in the block's thematic narrative.
The artwork for the card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game's visual identity. Voss employed a soft, ethereal palette that aligns with the divine aesthetic of the Nyx realm, depicting a mystical vessel flowing with celestial energy. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional utility piece for limited formats, praised for its ability to stabilize a board state in the mid-to-late game through its ability to return multiple creature cards from the graveyard to the player's hand.
