Where it came from
Launch the Fleet was released in 2014 as part of Journey into Nyx, the final set in the Theros block for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to highlight the set's focus on Greek mythology and the enchantment-heavy themes of the block, specifically utilizing the heroic keyword mechanic. By allowing players to create soldier tokens for each creature they controlled that was targeting their own units, the card encouraged a go-wide strategy common in the white-aligned archetypes of the era.
The card's art was created by Wesley Burt, who drew inspiration from the epic, cinematic scale of classical warfare. The design intent was to capture the sudden, overwhelming momentum of an army surging forward in battle. Upon its release, it was regarded by players as a specialized tool for aggressive decks, particularly in the Limited and Standard formats of the time, where it served as a potent way to capitalize on board presence.
