Where it came from
Foot Soldiers was released in 1997 as part of the Portal set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was specifically designed as an introductory product to welcome new players to the hobby, featuring simplified mechanics and a distinct, self-contained aesthetic. The set is notable for its unique frame design and its effort to streamline gameplay for a broader audience, intentionally omitting complex abilities found in the core game at the time.
The card features artwork by Mike Kimble, who contributed several illustrations to the set. The design reflects the high-fantasy military theme of the Portal expansion, focusing on utilitarian creature types that helped teach players the fundamental concept of summoning and attacking. While the set received a mixed reception from veteran players who preferred the depth of standard expansions, it remains a recognized artifact of the game's mid-nineties efforts to expand its reach beyond specialist hobby shops.
