Provenance

Where it came from

Force of Nature was originally printed in the 1993 Alpha set as part of the debut of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Created by Richard Garfield, the game was intended to bridge the gap between traditional board games and role-playing games. This specific version originates from the rare 1994 Summer Magic set, also known as Edgar, which was intended as a corrected reprint of Revised Edition but was largely destroyed due to a high volume of printing errors, making it one of the most elusive sets in the history of the game.

The card's iconic illustration was provided by Douglas Shuler, one of the original artists for the game. Shuler's design for the Force of Nature captured the classic, imposing imagery of a powerful elemental, rendered with a visceral, painterly style that became synonymous with the game's early aesthetic. The card gained notoriety among players for its massive power-to-cost ratio, requiring a steep upkeep cost that forced players to make difficult strategic decisions, cementing its status as a memorable staple of the early card pool.
