Force of Nature

Force of Nature was released in 1993 as part of the Limited Edition Beta set for Magic: The Gathering, the world’s first collectible card game. Created by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the game emerged from a desire to combine traditional tabletop gaming with the rarity and collectibility of trading cards. Beta served as the refined follow-up to the initial Alpha print run, featuring corrected rules and an increased print volume to meet the unexpected demand for the game.

The card’s iconic illustration was rendered by Dameon Willich, who captured the towering, arboreal menace of the creature in a style characteristic of early Magic art. At the time of its release, the card was prized for its massive power and toughness, representing the pinnacle of the green mana color pie. While its high casting cost and upkeep requirement made it a challenging card to play competitively in later years, its status as one of the most recognizable and formidable creatures from the game’s formative era has made it a significant piece of trading card history.
