Force of Nature

Force of Nature was released in 1993 as part of the Unlimited Edition, the second print run of the original Magic: The Gathering base set. Created by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the game emerged from a desire to combine the deep strategy of tabletop war games with the collectibility of trading cards. As a massive eight-mana green creature with trample, the card quickly became an iconic symbol of the game's early power-level curve, representing the high-cost, high-reward threats that defined the kitchen-table play style of the mid-1990s.

The card’s striking illustration was provided by Douglas Shuler, one of the original artists for the set. Shuler’s depiction of the elemental entity captures the wild, unpredictable essence of green mana, featuring a towering, earthen form that embodied the game's fantasy aesthetic. While the card saw significant use in early tournament play, it is now primarily valued by collectors for its role in Magic history, standing as a cornerstone example of the classic design philosophy established during the game's foundational year.
