Where it came from
Forfend was released in February 2008 as part of the Morningtide set, the second expansion in the Lorwyn block for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set explored themes of class and race within the lore of the plane, focusing on tribal synergies and the concept of adventuring parties. As a white instant, the card reflects the game's mechanical philosophy of protection and reactive disruption, offering players a way to save a creature while simultaneously cycling through their deck.
The artwork for Forfend was created by illustrator Matt Cavotta, a long-time contributor to the game who frequently infused his pieces with a distinctive, whimsical, and sometimes unsettling aesthetic. His design captures a moment of magical intervention, emphasizing the protective nature of the spell. Upon its release, the card was primarily utilized as a utility piece in Limited formats, where the ability to mitigate damage while maintaining card advantage provided modest tactical value without becoming a centerpiece of constructed play.
