Where it came from
Forgotten Ancient first appeared in the Scourge expansion in 2003, designed as a creature that synergized with the mechanics of +1/+1 counters. It was created to reward players for casting spells throughout the game, positioning it as a potent engine in casual and multiplayer formats where long-term board presence is highly valued. The card’s design reflects the early 2000s approach to creature power creep, offering a scalable threat that could easily dominate the board if left unanswered.
The version from Neon Dynasty Commander, collector number 117, features the original artwork by Greg Staples, who is known for his atmospheric and textured painterly style in the Magic: The Gathering universe. This reprint was included in the Buckle Up deck to support the artifact-heavy and counter-synergy themes prevalent in the Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty release. Its inclusion acknowledges the card's enduring status as a staple for green-aligned decks that rely on growth and interaction.
