Provenance

Where it came from

Forgotten Ancient first appeared in the 2002 Scourge expansion for Magic: The Gathering, designed as a green creature that thrives on the presence of other spells. The card was conceptualized by the Wizards of the Coast design team to reward players for interactive play styles, allowing the creature to grow progressively stronger as both players cast their spells throughout the game.

The original illustration, provided by artist Greg Hildebrandt, depicts the creature as a massive, moss-covered behemoth rooted in an ancient forest. The card gained significant popularity in casual Commander formats due to its ability to distribute +1/+1 counters to other creatures, and it was subsequently included in The List to provide players with ongoing access to impactful utility cards from the game's deep history.
