Forgotten Ancient

Forgotten Ancient was originally released in the 2003 Magic: The Gathering set Scourge, designed by the Wizards of the Coast research and development team. As a core part of the set's focus on creature power manipulation and the growth of powerful avatars, it was conceptualized to reward players for casting multiple spells, embodying the chaotic, ever-expanding nature of nature-themed decks.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Carl Critchlow, whose distinct, painterly style helped define the visual identity of the Scourge set. Known for his work across several trading card games, Critchlow crafted an image of a hulking, wood-and-stone entity that visually communicates its ability to gather +1/+1 counters. It was well-received by the player base as a staple for multiplayer formats, eventually finding its way into 'The List,' a curated selection of reprints that keeps iconic cards available for new generations of players.
