Where it came from
Forgotten Cave was originally introduced in the Onslaught set in 2002, designed as part of a cycle of lands featuring the cycling mechanic. This ability allowed players to discard the card for a cost to draw a new one, providing utility in the late game when a land draw might otherwise be unwelcome. The card was reimagined for the Bloomburrow Commander release in 2024 to fit the woodland aesthetic of the set, featuring new artwork that depicts the cozy, shadowed nooks characteristic of the plane's small-animal inhabitants.
The Bloomburrow iteration was illustrated by artist Billy Christian, who leaned into the set's storybook-inspired visual identity. By trading the arid, rocky desert aesthetic of the original card for a lush, subterranean burrow environment, the design emphasizes the comfort and safety of the plane's denizens. This version serves as both a functional utility land for Commander players and a stylistic bridge between the mechanical history of the card and the thematic focus of its current home.
